National New England Clam Chowder Day

“Clam Chowder is rude, rugged, a food of body and substance - like Irish stew, Scottish haggis, English steak and kidney pie - a worthy ration for the men and women of a pioneer race and for their offspring." - Louis P. De Gouy, "The Soup Book"

It's National New England Clam Chowder Day!

Sponsored by: Galaxy Nutritional Foods

I was never a huge clam chowder fan. Despite growing up in New England, it wasn't something I ever acquired a taste for although it was ingrained in me that it was absolute blasphemy to make chowder with any kind of tomato product.

That's not genuine clam chowder, my friends, that's something those silly New Yorker's do.

Going in to today I had only one goal in mind: to tackle the challenge that would be making clam chowder vegan head-on and to come out triumphant. I certainly didn't expect today to change my mind (or taste buds) regarding the food, however.

And it didn't.

I made an EXCELLENT, totally animal-free, mock clam chowder. I did!

If you like clam chowder, that is.

I continue to be totally infatuated with Galaxy's veggie cream cheese. I'm finding excuses to use it in everything. I love it because when I eat it, I don't feel like I'm eating a dairy-alternative product (oh, you know the kind: they have a very off-putting flavor and even more distinct aftertaste, they smell a little like the bed of a dusty eighteen wheeler, and have the texture of semi-blended chalk). It's a dairy, cholesterol, lactose, and gluten free, Kosher certified, natural cream cheese alternative with no hydrogenated fat... that tastes entirely opposite of all those things. It's a tub of rich, smooth "cream cheese" that I'd like to lather all over my body and lick off.

Sorry, I think I overshared there.

You know what I mean, though. Right? RIGHT?! I'm not alone in this fantasy thought, I can't be. Anyway . . .

Happy National New England Clam Chowder Day!
