National Pie Day/National Rhubarb Pie Day

"A boy doesn't have to go to war to be a hero; he can say he doesn't like pie when he sees there isn't enough to go around." - Edgar Watson Howe

It's National Pie Day!

It's National Rhubarb Pie Day, too!

I think that about sums it all up, don't you?

(By the way: I took this picture at Moody's Diner in Waldoboro, ME. Cleverly, they make bumper stickers that say: "When I get hungry, I get moody!" My parents purchased me once the instant they saw it. I have no idea why.)

One of the very first pies I remember my mom making was strawberry-rhubarb. We would wake up very early and hit the strawberry fields; the first rays of the summer sunlight warming the berries that sat heavy and ripe on their plants willing to be picked. Or eaten then and there. Swatting away the lazy bees, she and I would pick a tremendous amount in a very short amount of time. And as we would leave whatever farm stand we were at, she would purchase a fist full of rhubarb, a date-filled cookie for each of us, and sometimes a bucket of peas (I have this one very vivid memory of being forced to watch the movie "South Pacific" while shelling my weight in those little green demons).

As a result, the first pie I learned how to make was strawberry-rhubarb.

And on National Pie Day AND National Rhubarb Pie Day (I love that they're on the same day!)... that's exactly what I want to eat!
