National Café Au Lait Day

"I think we all pray to the first cup of the day. It's a silent prayer, sung while the mind is still foggy and blue. 'O Magic Cup,' it might go, 'Carry me above the traffic jam. Keep me civil in the subway. And forgive my employer, as you forgive me. Amen'" - Stewert Lee Allen

It's National Café Au Lait Day!

Many moons ago when I had an Office-esque job, my coworkers and I used to escape every day for some respite at the nearest coffee-joint-with-a-two-tailed-green-mermaid-logo-that-shall-remain-nameless. One of the baristas grew to know and like us. Today, when my drink was ready, she said "Here's your café au lait."

Then she stopped, looked up at me, smirked, and effortlessly continued: "I hope I made it the right way. Did you remember to pay? You should all go outside and play. Even though it's gray. Or you could take off your coats and stay. I hope I don't scare you away. You're leaving now? Okay. Well then, I hope you all have a great day!"

That's talent right there. Skills like that are tremendously impressive.

(Also, to the other barista who rang us up: I'm terribly sorry my video camera made you nervous. And no, I don't make up these national food holidays. If I did, don't you think I would have strolled in there and told you it was like, I don't know, National Biscotti and Chocolate Cake Batter Frappacino Day With An Extra Shot of Espresso? Which is, like, way more creative and delicious then my two dollar coffee-and-steamed-milk request? Really, now.)

Happy National Café Au Lait Day!
