National Pistachio Day

"Then their father Israel said to them, 'If it must be, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your bags and take them down to the man as a gift—a little balm and a little honey, some spices and myrrh, some pistachio nuts and almonds." - Genesis 43:11

It's National Pistachio Day!

(So was January 26th for those of you keeping track!)

"My grandfather was one of my best friends. What brought us together was our mutual love of the outdoors: sports, gardening, walking, nature, anything that wasn’t squirrels (he waged a mighty war he couldn't win with the squirrels who knew every way ever to get from point a: the ground, to point b: his bird feeder). Love of working with our hands. Love of food. Love of family. Love of simple pleasures. I was his “little buddy.” We were happy in each other’s company regardless if it was digging up tulips, eating terrible fast food he loved, working quietly on a puzzle together, or, as he got older, just watching TV together.

One of my favorite moments with him is so simple and boring that the magnitude of it will fall short to you, and so I apologize. But once, about a year before he passed away, when he was all by himself at his house, I swung by and picked him up. We went to the ice cream store down the road, parked, and ate ice cream quietly together. I had a mountain of chocolate soft serve in a dish, while he had one scoop of full-fat, full-sugar pistachio. “Your sugar level is going to be high tonight, Pépère,” I mentioned after he had scraped every single bit of ice cream out of his bowl.

”It’s just a little treat. I don’t do it that often. Besides, if anyone asks, I’ll blame it on you,” and he patted me on the knee. “Alright, little buddy, let’s go home.”"

Pistachios will always hold a special place in my heart. So, I don't mind how many times I have to celebrate this food holiday!

Happy National Pistachio Day!
