National Tater Tot Day

"The man who has nothing to boast of but his illustrious ancestry is like the potato . . . the best part under ground." - Thomas Overbury

It's National Tater Tot Day!
(Please note: I don't know if this is actually a "real" food holiday, but I'm celebrating it anyway!)

I don't have the highest opinion of "the tater tot." In my opinion, it may be one of the lowliest foods in the culinary kingdom. I don't blame this on the tater tot themselves; it's not their fault they've gotten such a negative connotation in my mind. I'm pretty sure it's the people who make them who've ruined their poor image. Because, when it come to tater tots all I think of is greasy, incredibly soggy, totally bland potato lumps that kids are forced to eat during school lunch by angry cafeteria ladies.

Naturally, I also think of Napoleon Dynamite.

As a result, I don't think I've had a tater tot in maybe fifteen years.

Tonight that changed.

A few months ago my sister and I were walking through the organic section in the grocery store when she suddenly, joyously squealed, "THEY MAKE SWEET POTATO TOTS NOW?!" She ripped open the freezer door, yanked out a bag of frozen tots, and looked at me with sheer excitement. "Awesome," I responded sarcastically and kept walking. What I didn't know then was that she had pulled out a bag of all-natural Alexia "Sweet Potato Puffs", the very tater tots that - courtesy of them - I got to try tonight.

And that changed my foodie feelings (for the better!) towards the tot family.

These are like a grown-up version of the tater tots from our youth. They're the perfect textural balance of crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - which is the exact consistency I want from a tot. They aren't at all heavy, and are slightly sweeter tasting than you might expect (which matches perfectly with a spicier dipping sauce [I made a raspberry-chipotle one for tonight]!).

Accompanied with homemade apple sauce and chickenless fingers? It totally makes me feel like I'm eating the sophisticated, gourmet, adult version of a kid's meal!

Happy National Tater Tot Day!
