National Artichoke Hearts Day

"After all the trouble you go to, you get about as much actual 'food' out of eating an artichoke as you would from licking 30 or 40 postage stamps." - Miss Piggy

It's National Artichoke Hearts Day!

When I first celebrated this food holiday, it was my sixth season being an alcohol spokes model. It all started in 2007 when I was one of the Jack Girls at the Jack Daniels sponsored Adult Spring Break in Killington, VT. They were looking for young models to go and spend a week hosting winter-themed games during the day (think turkey bowling and outhouse races on a frozen pond), après ski parties in the afternoon, and hanging out at one of two bars in the evening for shots, dancing, and a "gambling room."

I had never done something like this, but it was an all expenses paid trip PLUS a paycheck - so how could I say no? I quickly became the "Sporty Jack Girl": I conducted the winter games in the daylight (turkey bowling!, outhouse racing!), and when it was dark out I became the premier blackjack dealer.

During our week, we ate a tremendous amount of good food. Specifically, I remember me and one of the other girls became addicted to this hot artichoke and crab dip at one of our après ski locales we frequented. We ended up eating it every day.

Around this time each year, I always think about that week in Killington that started off my entire career as an alcohol spokes model.

And that motherflippin' artichoke and crab dip of utter seduction.

(Which I've tried to recreate here for you from a PETA recipe . . . sans the actual crab, cheese, or sexy promo girls).

((Well, maybe with a sexy . . . older, more tired looking . . . promo girl, anyway.))

Happy National Artichoke Hearts Day!
