National Baked Scallops Day

It's National Baked Scallops Day!

Scallops - those little blue-eyed, bi-valve mollusks - have lent their name to the culinary term "scalloped," which refers to dishes baked in a cream sauce (originally, this was in regards to seafood specifically that was presented to diners on shells). Which means - for those of us who like our friends who live in the sea - we can still celebrate the day by eating scalloped potatoes!

I'm not a huge "scalloped" or "au gratin" fan as I generally find those dishes far too rich for me personally (yes, even this girl has her culinary limitations!). But that doesn't mean they aren't delicious from time to time, especially on a food holiday where it's being celebrated!
