National Cold Cuts Day

"Too few people understand a really good sandwich." - James Beard

It's National Cold Cuts Day!

I've had a love-love relationship with cold cuts my entire life.

When I was very little one of my favorite foods in the entire world to both eat and play with was bologna and cheese (or: "boney cheese"). I was known for biting a hole in the middle of my "boney" by folding the slice, then slapping it on my forehead.

When I was in elementary school, I had a very serious retainer to help straighten out my teeth. I couldn't bite down into anything, so my sandwiches had to be cut up into tiny little bite-sized pieces. Thankfully, I have one helluva Mom who went out of her way to do this for me so I could continue eating the food I loved (though I think we had graduated from bologna to turkey at that point).

In college I was obsessed with ham and lettuce sandwiches with a light layer of mayo because they were both low calorie and incredibly cheap to make (two very important elements when you're paying for your schooling and scared of The Freshman Fifteen). I ate them with an orange for many, many (many) nights.

I'm thankful that there are so many veg-based "cold cut" options out there today. So, today, I'm celebrating one of the foods I've always loved with a true deli style luncheon: a f'am (fake ham) sandwich reminiscent of those uni days, thick chips, a pickle, some homemade potato salad, and coffee and pie for dessert.

Yes. You should be jealous.
