National Oranges and Lemons Day

“Life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit.” - Kahlil Gibran

It's National Oranges and Lemons Day!

Sponsored by: Zevia

A couple years ago I was running through Whole Foods on my lunch break grabbing some things to eat when I suddenly, and guiltily, began craving soda. One should not lust after something as sinfully unnatural as soda when they're in Ye Olde Whole Paycheck. But there I was panting desperately after a Diet Coke that I knew was no good for my health, when a small, shiny blue can caught my attention. It was an "all-natural" soda (I didn't even know something like that existed!) by a company called Zevia that had no sugar and no calories.

And it rocked.

I immediately went back after work and bought a six-pack of Zevia's ginger root beer (which I think tastes far better than any other root beers I've had, because it has more of a spicy bite to it)!

(From the "365 Project:" March 22nd)

Their sodas contain no artificial sweeteners, no colors, no GMO's, zero to no sodium, and non of that other junk that in more mainstream sodas. They use only the best ingredients to make their beverages, so we "can drink this diet soda knowing it’s been made with love and care!"

So how do they sweeten their sodas? Well, it's a combination of stevia and erythritol: and both are plant based sweeteners. I don't know about you, but I trust nature more than I trust man-made chemicals (*cough* aspartame *cough*).

And Zevia uses cans instead of glass bottles, because it's the far more eco-friendly option. Aluminum cans are 2X more likely to get recycled then other options. Crazy, right? But it's true: plastic production has outpaced recycling by five times and glass bottles create a higher carbon footprint because of their weight. And don't worry about any BPA in the lining of the cans - it's 2,000 times lower than the FDA's "acceptable" level!

Happy National Oranges and Lemons Day!
