National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

Did you know?: (supposedly) the average American will have eaten 1,500 PB&J sammys before graduating from high school (that's eleven gallons each of both peanut butter and jelly - and that's only if you're heeding the serving size suggestion on the nutritional label! And, c'mon, who really does that?).

For the second time this year, I got to try an entirely new fruit spread from Crofter's Organic. This time around, I thought I'd try something from a part of the world I've never been to: South America. This superfruit spread includes maqui berries and passionfruit blended with red grapes and morello cherries. I had never heard of maqui berries before now, but found out that they grow in the rainforests of Chile and Argentina and have the highest antioxidant activity of any fruit. Which means your body is better protected from toxins, chemicals, and free radicals that like to wreck havoc on the body. Some sources even say that the maqui berry, because it's so packed with antioxidants, contributes to weight loss (think about it: when you rid your body of toxins, it allows it to become healthier).

Well, hello little wonder berry! Where've you been all my days?!

The spread was MUCH more tart than I was expecting it to be (in a good way! in a, like, I don't know: "WAKE UP, GIRLFRIEND AND LIVE!" kind of way), but once that initial taste subsided I was left with a mouth full of different layers of flavors. Each bite in and I felt like I got an explosion of something new: it was sour, sweet, and entirely juicy as strange as that sounds. It definitely made my peanut butter sandwich come alive!

Crofter's has been one of the best finds of my year so far: I'm entirely pleased with their full-bodied spreads and look forward to trying all the different flavors (I've been chomping at the bit to have a cup of a tea and some Sicilian Blood Orange on thick toast!). Plus, they're a company that not only makes my tummy happy, but they make my soul happy. All of their spreads are organic and non-GMO verified. On their website they state: "We want you to feel good about what you eat, so we only put the good stuff in our jars. Jam isn't for worrying; it's for enjoying."

Sentiments like that make me weepy.

Me? I'm an unsalted peanut butter and Crofter's South America Superfruit on blueberry waffles with a side of vegan breakfast sausage kinda gal.

(Even vegans can have a "heart attack on a plate" kind of meal.)
