National Raisin and Spice Bar Day

“Is not birth, beauty, good shape, discourse, manhood, learning, gentleness, virtue, youth, liberality, and such like, the spice and salt that season a man” - William Shakespeare

It's National Raisin and Spice Bar Day!

I'm not sure I've ever actually sought out raisin and spice bars. For that matter, until today I didn't think anybody actually sought them out. But there wouldn't be a national food holiday if someone - a large body of someone's - didn't love them. Is there some sort of secret raisin and spice bar baked goods club I don't know about?!

Maybe I was simply deprived as a child of something extraordinary. I feel like this is one of those sweet treats grandmother's make. My maternal grandmother was far too sassy for this kinda stuff. She was more the slip-you-a-fiver-to-go-to-the-store-and-get-a-pint-of-your-favorite-ice-cream kinda gal. Unless you were my sister, then she was a give-you-a-bowl-filled-with-Cool-Whip-topped-with-jimmys-and-hot-fudge-sauce-but-don't-tell-your-mother-I-let-you-eat-this kinda woman.

No, seriously.

Now, apparently my mom loves raisin and spice bars, because when I told her what today's food holiday was she was thrilled (she may have put her hand to heart like she was remembering a long lost lover). So what? Did this particular baked good skip generations? Is my mom part of this secret club I know nothing about?!

Tonight I found out... and I'm sad I've gone so long without this hearty, spicy treat.

Happy National Raisin and Spice Bar Day!
