International Picnic Day

"We hope that, when the insects take over the world, they will remember with gratitude how we took them along on all our picnics." - Bill Vaughn

It's International Picnic Day!

Picnic's are a lot of fun... but they can be a lot of work, too. I don't know about you, but sometimes I just want to go outside and play. I don't wanna always have to plan everything out ahead of time. Like... what if I'm having a grand time at the beach or hiking, and suddenly I'm ravenous (ravishing)?! I'm not a very nice person when I'm hungry, so how am I going to tame the beast I become so I can continue getting my beach or hike on?

I recently discovered these sweet, portable meals from GoPicnic that are small enough to fit inside a backpack, but are big on flavor and wholesome nutrition (that means you won't find any trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, MSG, or artificial flavors, preservatives, and colors that you might would definitely find at a fast food restaurant or food cart closest to the sand or mountains you're enjoying). They're also perfectly portioned for one serving, so there should be nothing in excess you'll have to toss - one of my biggest pet peeves about our country is how much food we waste, so I was thrilled to see this was a concern for GoPicnic as well!

And thanks to GoPicnic's excellent ingredients and high-performance packaging methods, their meals are "shelf-stable entrees." Which means, as long as you haven't opened anything, they're good to keep in your pantry until their individual expiration date. Which they'll never see, anyway (seriously, do you know how hard it was for me to wait to eat them until today?!).

GoPicnic graciously sent me one of every kind of meal they make. I shared the non-vegetarian ones with my family who had never heard of the company, but thought their entire concept was too cool especially for people with crazy schedules, dietary needs (my stepdad is a diabetic, and sometimes the man just needs a snack to keep on going), or folks traveling. I was told their GoPicnic meals ("Salami + Cheese", "Turkey Stick + Crunch", and "Turkey Pepperoni + Cheese") were "super tasty and the perfect mid-day boost to keep going."

I couldn't agree more! I got to try three separate ones (I know: I'm such a ziggypiggy): "Sunbutter + Crackers", "Hummus + Crackers", and "Peanut Butter + Crackers." They were each really different from each other, but had perfectly complimenting flavors/snacks in each one. I have to admit, that the "Sunbutter + Crackers" was my favorite - the sunbutter balanced out the saltiness of the sea salt crackers, while the trail mix felt filling but not heavy. AND IT CAME WITH A DOUBLE CHOCOLATE COOKIE. The best part? It was totally vegan. Take that naysayers who think you can't get protein anywhere by meat! Anyway, overall, I was pretty impressed with these little boxed meals - although the way they're packaged make me feel like a little kid (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, right?)!

Check out GoPicnic on Facebook or Twitter. And check them out in real life, too! Whatever your dietary needs - all-natural, gluten-free, pescetarian, vegan, vegetarian, kosher - they've got something for everyone. Which means: you can keep soakin' up rays at the beach or discovering new trails at the mountain without turning into a hungry, hungry hippo!

Happy International Picnic Day!
