National Strawberry Shortcake Day

"This special feeling towards fruit, its glory and abundance, is I would say universal.... We respond to strawberry fields or cherry orchards with a delight that a cabbage patch or even an elegant vegetable garden cannot provoke." - Jane Grigson

It's National Strawberry Shortcake Day!

Strawberry shortcake means summer to me. It means getting up very early with my mom, driving to the strawberry fields, and picking buckets and buckets of berries amidst the humming bees in the morning heat stopping from time to time to eat one of the warm, juicy berries right from the vines. She and I could pick a whole lotta berries in a very short amount of time. We would drive home, satisfied at what we had accomplished, while sharing a homemade date-filled cookie the ladies who ran the strawberry fields sold at the makeshift cash register.

And that night for dessert, my mom would make strawberry shortcake.

A bright, beautiful, seasonal blessing if ever there was one.

Unfortunately, strawberries aren't quite ready here in New England, but I saved a batch of strawberry shortcake goo from last summer so all I had to do was rummage through my freezer to find it.

Bliss!

Happy National Strawberry Shortcake Day!
