National Pecan Pie Day

"I would be proud to partake of your pecan pie." - Billy Crystal as Harry Burns in "When Harry Met Sally"

It's National Pecan Pie Day!

(Unashamed to admit that this is one of my favorite movies of all time.)

Did you know that pecan pie, despite what most people think, is not actually a "Southern specialty"? This kind of pie is French in origin. Supposedly, pecan pie stems from French immigrants living in New Orleans who substituted pecans in their recipes. Although, there is rumor that the Karo company (think corn syrup) is actually the one who popularized the dessert with the first recipe.

And now you're all the wiser, foodies.

Don't know about you, but I... LOVE... pecan pie.

Sans pecans, that is.

But that gel underneath? Just gorgeous.

As a matter of fact, I've spent my entire life scraping the pecans off my pecan pie onto my moms plate so that I could focus on the part of the pie I love the most. So today, it was totally necessary that I celebrate with her (mostly because I needed someone to eat my pecans). I bought a pie from the local bakery and spent some much needed QT with my Momma, some iced coffee, and a big, old wedge of pecan gel pie.

A perfect summer day.

Happy National Pecan Pie Day!
