National Piña Colada Day

"I like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain." - Rupert Holmes

It's National Piña Colada Day!

What do you know about the piña coladas besides the fact that they're DE-LISH?

Supposedly, the piña colada was created by Ramón Marrero in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1954 (or was it Ramón Portas Mingot in 1963? Maybe it was Ricardo Garcia in Cuba in 1950?) for the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar. Quite literally, "piña coladas" translates to "strained pineapple" in Spanish. Which, y'know, makes sense given that the traditional drink is made with pineapple juice, rum, and coconut cream (that's an important distinction) poured over or blended with crushed ice and topped with a mini umbrella.

Or a drizzle of chocolate syrup if you're me (seriously, try it).

And now you're all the wiser, lushes foodies.

Salud!

Happy National Piña Colada Day!
