National Banana Split Day

"In today’s job climate, you can’t afford to be a vanilla sundae. You need to be a banana split." - Peter McCarthy

It's National Banana Split Day!

Banana splits are one of the most decadent desserts in the world.

Or so I thought when I was little. Not only were they were the most expensive thing on the handwritten menu that was taped in the window of the local ice cream place we frequented when I was younger. But they were enormous, too. I remember it took two hands just to hold it!

A standard split is a variation of a sundae and includes an open-faced cut banana topped with a scoop of vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate ice cream. Each feature a generous topping: hot fudge, pineapple sauce, and strawberry sauce. It's then finished with whipped cream, nuts, and cherries.

Personally, I'm not a huge a fan. Never have been. To me, the combination of flavors and textures are just way too much. I mean, why complicate ice cream? It's fine as is!

Today, on the advice of a friend, I stopped by a juice shoppe in town that made a "Bananarama" smoothie: bananas, Nutella, dark chocolate, yogurt, and soy. Maybe a little non-traditional for a "banana split," but it worked for me (after all, the banana had to be split in order to go in the blender, there's dairy, chocolate, and Nutella is made from hazelnuts which are a nut... soooooooo, it was like the best parts from a deconstructed banana split that were then blended. Totally legit.)

Happy National Banana Split Day!
