National Filet Mignon Day

"If you're going to get a steak, make it a sirloin or filet mignon. They're the real cut above the rest." - Jayne Hurley

It's National Filet Mignon Day!

Sponsored byVege USA

As a friendly, gentle herbivore nothing about this day interests me. Expect maybe the name. It appeals to my French-Canadian heart. Filet mignon, in my ancestor's tongue, means "cute filet" or "dainty filet." I've actually been affectionately called "mignon" before.
In the culinary world, however, today is not about short, sassy, freckled girls. It's about the most tender and expensive steak cut of beef. Gag.

If I were to make a list of the Top Ten Days I Was Least Looking Forward To Celebrating today would've been on that list (not as high as National Roast Leg of Lamb Day, though). Thanks to Vege USA, though, my extreme worries about how I was going to pull this off were taken care of (seriously, Vege USA, where would I be without you?). They graciously offered to send me some of their vegan black pepper steaks. Since I wasn't a huge beef/pork fan when I was a meat eater, I'm generally not inclined to try vegan alternatives now. So, days like today always excite me because they force me out of my culinary comfort zone.

I was really impressed with the texture and flavor of these. They weren't sinewy, tough, or overly chewy. They were actually... tender. And the taste was as advertised: peppery and sweet. I always appreciate it when I know exactly how something is going to taste based on the picture/description on the box. I know it seems like a trivial thing, but when you have a plant-based diet and are constantly trying new things to see what you like and what you don't, having a product honestly look like and taste like how you would expect it to is always a relief.

At Vege USA, they make authentically Asian and internationally-themed gourmet frozen and vegetarian meat alternatives that make it easy to maintain a healthy diet without sacrificing the tastes you love. "With a focus on premium-quality meat-free products and deliciously original recipes culled from every corner of the world, Vege USA is a one-stop shop for anyone looking to embrace a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle," according to their website.

Sounds like the perfect way to have a happy and cruelty-free National Filet Mignon Day, cutie!
