National Rum Day

"There's naught, no doubt, so much the spirit calms as rum and true religion." - Lord Byron

It's National Rum Day!

Rum's distilled from sugarcane byproducts - like juice or molasses - in oak barrels. Most of the world's production occurs in the Caribbean or Latin America (and Puerto Rico is considered "The Rum Capital of the World"). After it was first developed, it became very popular in colonial America - the first distillery was set-up in 1664 in (what's present day) Staten Island, NY.

And now you're all the wiser, foodies.

There are so many ways to celebrate today - a pina colada, a mojito, a mai tai, a dark and stormy, or the way that I LOVE to drink rum in the summer: coconut-flavored with a little cola and a cherry or twelve.

Yo, ho, ho, and a bottle of...

Happy National Rum Day!
