National S'mores Day

Buzz Lightyear: "Don't worry, Woody. In just a few hours you'll be sitting around a campfire with Andy making delicious hot Schmoes."
Woody:  "They're called 'S'mores,' Buzz."

It's National S'mores Day!

Not having a campfire is no excuse not to celebrate today's perfect summer dessert. We didn't growing up, yet my mom did an excellent job at making sure my sister and I participated in this ultimate, ooey, gooey, messy dessert thanks to the microwave or an open candle. Conceptually, it's still the same thing, right?: friends hanging out, eating graham crackers, chocolate, and melty marshmallows.

The first s'mores - a condensed version of "some more" - recipe was published in the Girl Scout Handbook in 1927. My mom was a Girl Scout... I wonder if that's why she makes the best s'mores - campfire, microwave, candle, or otherwise - of anybody I know? They obviously know a secret the rest of us don't.

(It might just be that magic ingredient - love - that all mom's put in food.)

However you celebrated today - out in the woods or curled up on the couch - I hope it was one filled with wonderful childhood memories.

Happy National S'mores Day!
