National Rum Punch Day

“I pity them greatly, but I must be mum, for how could we do without sugar and rum?” - William Cowper

It's National Rum Punch Day!

I'm not sure why, but other food bloggers think National Rum Punch Day today is fitting considering National Talk Like a Pirate Day was yesterday. If you were the creator of either holiday, don't you think you would have put them on the same day? Doesn't that make more sense? Argh (oh, c'mon, I had to)!

Rum punch is exactly what it sounds like... rum and punch. However, the definition of punch isn't as straightforward as you might think. It's a drink that may or may not contain fruit or fruit juice, and may or may not also be alcoholic. What is known, however, is that since the "New World" people have been mixing rum with citrus juice and weak beer to make something called grog. It was pretty popular with the British Royal Navy in the 17th and 18th centuries, because it was believed it helped prevent scurvy.

And now you're all the wiser, foodies!

Happy National Rum Punch Day!
