National Nut Day

"Food - I love nuts. I eat them all the time, they're easy to carry around, and I am never hungry all day long." - Mehmet Oz

It's National Nut Day!

As it is with most food holidays, the origin of today's food holiday is unknown. However, today was probably created to promote delicious and healthy living by eating nuts which are packed full of protein, vitamins and minerals, fiber, antioxidants, plant sterols, and omega fats meaning a reduced risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol, and improved blood vessel function.

Improved heart health? Definitely a reason to celebrate.

Personally, I trust any food that's been around for... well... ever. Did you know that walnuts are actually the oldest tree food known to man? Around 7,000 B.C. the Romans called them "Jupiter's royal acorn."

And now you're all the wiser, foodies from here and abroad!

There've been a lot of nut-based food holidays throughout the year, so I wanted to celebrate today a little differently. For years, my mom has made what we call "nutspread" (a combination of olives, walnuts, and cream cheese) during the holidays. And since those aren't too far away now, I thought I'd get the party started earlier (goodbye hips, nice knowin' ya!).

Happy National Nut Day!
