National Sausage Pizza Day

One of the best dates you can have in the early stages of a relationship is to make pizza together. It's fun, tremendously intimate, low-key, and can reveal a lot about the other person's personality. Do they take their time making pizza, savoring the process and sampling each individual component before they become one? Are they a little more at ease with themselves, playfully throwing flour at you or wiping a streak of tomato sauce down your cheek before gently wiping (or kissing) it off? Do they meticulously check the pizza when it's in the oven to make sure the cheese is brown and bubbly they way you - but maybe not they - like it? Does they take one more bite than you while eating dinner so that no matter how much you eat, they're always just a little bit more of a pig than you?

There's a tremendous amount of unsaid things happening when a couple makes pizza.

Maybe sausage is an incredibly sexy ingredient to some people.... the spice, the texture, the distinct and inviting aroma. Someone obviously thought so, because it became a national food holiday. If you have a plant-based diet, don't let today be a turn-off. Sausage itself may not excite you (it certainly doesn't for me), but being able to create a masterpiece of a pizza entirely animal - and thus cruelty - free and sharing it with someone that does turn you on should.

I'm using Field Roast's Apple Sage Sausage today. According to their website, it's "made from a savory combination of apples and sage, anchored with yukon gold potatoes with a subtle hint of hickory smoke." And while I usually find these marketing-y product statement fluffy and unrealistic... this one is spot-on. The flavors were beautifully balanced (although I could have used with a little more "apple" - this is just a biased opinion because of my obsession with the fruit, though!). And I was seriously taken aback at how perfect the texture was. I know a meat alternative product has successfully done it's job when I have to constantly check the label to make sure it's actually vegan. It both held up well outside of the casing and it crumbled perfectly, too. The spice, the texture, the distinct and inviting aroma?

Apple Sage Sausage by Field Roast is very, very sexy.

Field Roast has been making artisnal vegan grain meat products since 1997. Started in Seattle, WA chef David Lee created it by combining the European charcuterie tradition of sausage making with the Asian Mien Ching - or "Buddha's Food" - tradition crafting vegetarian meats from grains. David, a long-time supporter of animal rights causes and organizations created to end farm animal suffering, received two humanitarian awards in 2011: Farm Sanctuary’s Corporate Leader in Compassion Award and the James Beard Foundation’s Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Compassion may just be the sexiest thing anyone can wear.

Or, for that matter, eat.
