National Cashew Day

"Two handfuls of cashews give you the therapeutic equivalent of a prescription dose of Prozac." - Dr. Andrew Saul from the documentary "Food Matters"

It's National Cashew Day!

Sponsored by: Sahale Snacks

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days of the year, so I'm always a little sad the day after. I know there's much to be thankful for (which is the reason for this particular day, yeah?) and to look forward to in the coming month. I do! But I like Thanksgiving because there's no hidden agendas or obligations. It's just people who love one another, coming together to break bread in honor of all the things they're blessed with that may go unrecognized or overlooked the rest of the year. And it's about good food - dishes made in love, dishes made to pay homage to the season or the geography, dishes made to carry on cultures.

It's why I like food in the first place. It forces people to stop whatever it is they're doing to nourish themselves to keep going. And usually - when you're eating with others - you're getting alot more nourishment than just caloric. Your soul, your brain, your heart is fueled, too.

I'm celebrating today with Sahale Snacks makes Cashews with Pomegranate and Vanilla. And they're divine. I almost ran out of nuts before I took the picture, because I just kept grabbing handfuls to snack on. They're sweet - but not cloyingly so. The vanilla is well blended into the nut, and the pomegranate has just the right amount of tartness to make these nuts entirely irresistible. It's no wonder that Shape magazine awarded these nuts with one of its annual “Best Snack” honors.

Sahale Snacks is the brainchild of two friends - Josh and Edmond - who hiked Mount Rainier in August 2003. Though the views were breathtaking, they had nothing to eat. According to their website, "the trail mix and stale nuts we brought on our trip helped to replenish lost energy, but did nothing to satisfy our desire for something great tasting, nutritious and as adventurous as our travels. That experience inspired us to create Sahale Snacks. We went back to our kitchens and created unique combinations of premium nuts, dried fruits, and exotic spices, each reflecting a beautiful location, culture and/or culinary tradition somewhere in the world."

Whether your adventure today is to the mall to battle Black Friday or a trip down memory lane, make sure you take a snack or two with you.

Happy National Cashew Day!
