National Sandwich Day

"You can make any meal into a sandwich, and any sandwich into a meal." - Jeff Mauro, The Sandwich King

It's National Sandwich Day!

Today is John Montagu's, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, birthday. Popular food lore says that Montagu loved to gamble. So much so that he refused to stop to eat. So, during one session in the 18th century, he had either his servants or a waiter bring him lunch meat tucked between two slices of bread so he could eat with one hand and keep gambling with the other.

That's serious business.

Anyway, now you're all the wiser, foodies.

Going in to today I was always sure about one thing: the shirt I was going to wear.

It's classic, right?

What I wasn't so sure about was the sandwich itself. There are just so many flipping options. And like ice cream, it really depends on the mood, season, and frame of mind you're in. Was I feeling something autumnal, serious, and nostalgic like a turkey, cranberry, and stuffing sandwich on a sub roll? Seems appropriate for this time of year, right?

Or, did I want something with a little more levity and energy like a hummus, cuke, and sprouts sandwich on multigrain bread? I could certainly polish one or two of those away and still feel good about myself.

In the end, I settled for something I personally consider both sexy, and substantial: Dubliner and avocado on sourdough wheat bread. If I were a sandwich, I think that's what I'd want to be. Maybe with a couple slices of apple, too.

However you celebrate today, I hope you have a...

Happy National Sandwich Day!
