National Cookie Day

"When I buy cookies, I eat just four and throw the rest away. But first I spray them with Raid so I won't dig them out of the garbage later. Be careful, though, because that Raid really doesn't taste that bad." - Janette Barber

It's National Cookie Day!

Sponsored by: Alternative Baking Company

When I lived in Ireland I au paired for a three year old Spanish boy. He spoke no English. I spoke no Spanish. But I did learn two words real quickly: sit and cookie. I would ask him to sit ("sentarse") and he would scream at me for a cookie ("galleta").

He got a lot of cookies.

I got a lot of quiet moments with sitting boy.

It was a great relationship.

I can't help but think of him today on National Cookie Day. Looking back, he embodied what adults feel, but learn to control: the desire for a sweet reward for doing something we don't really want to do. Can you imagine if the world was filled with cookie dispensers and offered you one every time you patiently stood in line at the DMV (where souls go to die), had a physical, paid an unexpected car bill, or cleaned your house? We'd all be fatter, but I think probably more content!

Unless they were Alternative Baking Company cookies, which look and taste like the very best traditionally made cookies, but contain no dairy, eggs, trans fats, hydrogenated oils, cholesterol, animal or artificial ingredients, or refined sugar. They're decadently good and good for you. "We are especially proud of our many mainstream customers since our success with them is, in our opinion, the best evidence that we are succeeding with our mission (to help make the dairy and meat industries obsolete by providing gourmet quality, vegan alternatives to traditional baked goods)," their website states.

Cookies they make include chocolate chip, espresso chip, lemon poppyseed (which are absolutely dreamy tasting), chocolate peanut butter cup, and vanilla bean. Today, I got to sample their Phenomenal Pumpkin Spice (unlike other pumpkin cookies on the market this really does have a beautiful bouquet of spices in it), Oatmeal Raisin (it's everything you would want an oatmeal raisin cookie to taste like), Double Chocolate Decadence (my favorite local movie theater carries these and I ALWAYS get one [or two] when I go, because they satiate my inner chocoholic!), Cranberry Orange Muffincookie with Walnuts (the combination of citrus and cranberry is subtle, yet flavorful). They were enormous, thick, soft, and delicious. I think Cookie Monster would approve.

I've been a fan of Alternative Baking Company for a long time now, and am thrilled that today I get to celebrate National Galleta Day with them (truthfully? I've been looking forward to this day from the very beginning of the project when I found out ABC would be participating in today with me)! Check 'em out on Facebook for more information.

Happy National Cookie Day!
