National Peppermint Latte Day

"The peppermint latte is the love of my life. On cold winter days it reminds me of a kid and sucking on a candy cane." - Keith Prickett

It's National Peppermint Latte Day!
(Please note: I don't know if this is actually a "real" food holiday, but I'm celebrating it anyway!)

To me, peppermint mocha lattes scream "IT'S THE HOLIDAYS! INDULGE!" Peppermint anything does, really. Today, while you're running around getting your Christmas shopping done (you are nearly done aren't you? If you're anything like me, you're still anxiously waiting for everything you ordered online to get to you), splurge on yourself and order one. It will get you in the seasonal mood, keep you warm, and will most likely help you stay sane as you fight the crowds.

But that's not all! (I feel like a game show host... "TELL 'EM WHAT ELSE IT'LL DO, STEFF!")

The peppermint plant is a hybrid of the spearmint and watermint plants, and has been around for a very long time. It's been used for medicinal purposes like nausea, indigestion, and bloating, as well as an anesthetic because of it's high menthol content. Peppermint oil is often used to treat sunburns, it can be rubbed on the temples to reduce tension headaches, and poured into foot baths to relieve stress of tired, aching feet. The aromatherapy benefits are just as wonderful: it can invigorate you, and help promote mental clarity and improved memory.

And now you're all the wiser, foodies.

Toss some peppermint with a little espresso and steamed milk, and it's really the perfect thing to drink when you're up to your ears in holiday stresses.

Extra whipped cream will probably help, too.

Happy National Peppermint Latte Day!
