International Day of Italian Cuisines

"Piatto ricco, mi ci ficco." (Rich plate, I dive in.) - an Italian proverb

Today is International Day of Italian Cuisines!

Can I tell you a secret? This is one of my favorite food holiday finds. But what is International Day of Italian Cuisines? It was essentially created as a way to protect the authenticity and traditionality of Italian food and (food) products worldwide. For more detailed information, I encourage you to visit the IDIC website.

Each year, IDIC and the Virtual Group of Italian Chefs (itchefs-GVCI) honor a specific food. At the IDIC's inception in 2008 it was Spaghetti alla Carbonara; in 2009 it was Risotto alla Milanese; Tagliatelle al rag├╣ Bolognese in 2010; Pesto Genovese in 2011; Ossobuco in Gremolata alla Milanese in 2012; tiramisu in 2013; and, in 2014 it's all about Spaghetti Pomodoro e Basilico. I don't know about you, but I know I'll be annually checking now what the IDIC 'food of the year' is!

I celebrated at a place that touts having the most authentic Italian food around. While I forgot to snap dessert (a creamy, flavorful homemade tiramisu since my initial celebration of the day fell in 2013), for dinner I had a brick-oven pizza topped fried eggplant, sun dried tomatoes, and ricotta. I regret not also getting olives on this mini 'za - that, and a little crushed red pepper flake, would have made it entirely perfect! Still, it was one of the most delectable ways to celebrate a food holiday!

Happy International Day of Italian Cuisines!
