Apple Gifting Day

“And when you crush an apple with your teeth, say to it in your heart: 'Your seeds shall live in my body, And the buds of your tomorrow shall blossom in my heart, And your fragrance shall be my breath, And together we shall rejoice through all the seasons." - Khalil Gibran

It's Apple Gifting Day!

What a better way to start the year than by giving an apple to someone you love. Just be careful what message you're trying to send as apples are symbolic for so many different things like temptation, desire, knowledge, fertility, and even health.

Apples are one of my favorite foods. There are many varieties - over 7,500! - some of the more unique ones I've heard about include...

Arkansas Black - This unique variety originated in the state it was named for. What sets these apples apart are their very dark skin and cider-like taste.

Redlove Era - A hybrid apple by Markus Kobelt of Switzerland, this fruit has red skin AND red flesh with a white line down the center (look up pictures - it's a gorgeous looking apple!). It's juicy, crisp, and sweet.

Stayman - Created in 1866 by Joseph Stayman, this apple comes in either green or yellow varieties. It has a tart, tangy, spicy, wine-like flavor and makes for a great dessert apple.

Interesting, right?

This fall when you're out at the orchards, consider trying a variety other than the standard Mac, Cortland, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith types. If you find something different sounding - go for that! When it comes to apples, you can't go wrong (unless an ugly old woman is trying to give you a poisoned one, that is).

Happy Apple Gifting Day!
