International Whisky Day

“Too much of anything is bad, but too much of good whiskey is barely enough.” - Mark Twain

It's International Whisky Day!

There will always be a special place in my heart for Jameson. The first time I ever had it was at Lough Tay (Guinness Lake) in the Wicklow Mountains of beautiful Ireland. I lived in Dublin for three months before me, Erika (the woman I was aupairing for), and her son Jordi decided to move back to her home town of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Before we left, I decided to take myself out on a date to see more of Ireland - a country I had longed to visit since I was a kid. When the tour bus rolled up to a cliff overlooking Guinness Lake our guide pulled out an unlabeled bottle of triple-distilled Jameson.

My journal entry from that day reads: "It was all beautiful and breathtaking - and it's exactly how I'd like to remember Ireland. I couldn't help but be overwhelmed with the presence of God, a sense of peace hovering around me, while I stood at the top of Loch Tay. There were rolling green mountains, cascading purple heather, and the sun flickering in and out of the clouds causing streams and waterfalls to glisten like a thousand diamonds. Standing there I realized, 'This is it - after a lifetime of wanting to be here, my time in Ireland has come to an end and I probably won't be returning.' As we toasted with a shot of Jameson, I suddenly felt emotional. I want to always remember Ireland aas an enchanting place where daffodils grow like weeds in the Springtime... a place that I found who I truly was."

Today was created in celebration of a man named Michael Jackson who was born on this day in 1942. He was passionate about both beer and whisky; so much so, that he wrote award-winning novels on the topics. A Dutch man named Hans Offringa originally started International Whisky Day to both commemorate Jackson's life and raise money for Parkinson's disease which Jackson suffered from. Although the "holiday" didn't gain much traction, the community of whisky/Jackson lovers still pay homage to him (and one of the world's most beloved drinks) on this day each year.

I decided today - since it's still so bitterly cold outside - to celebrate with a little Jameson in my coffee. Nothing like a nip and some caffeine to warm the bones!

Happy International Whisky Day!
