International No Diet Day

"If nature had intended our skeletons to be visible it would have put them on the outside of our bodies." - Elmer Rice

It's International No Diet Day!

International No Diet Day was created in the UK in 1992 by Mary Evans Young - the director of British organization Diet Breaker - to promote healthy lifestyles, the appreciation and acceptance of our bodies as they are, and to raise awareness of the dangers of obsessive dieting and size discrimination.

In the words of Mindy Kaling in The Mindy Project, "I fluctuate from chubby to curvy" depending on the week. But people are still intrigued at how a food blogger with a seriously healthy appetite - who also does promotional modeling for alcohol companies - "stays in shape". Well, I have a secret. You ready? 'Cause I'm gonna tell you. Here it goes... I eat whatever I want in moderation and move my bottom around a few times a week, too. That's it. There's no science behind it; there's nothing psychologically damaging about it because I'm not telling myself that I "can't" eat something; there's no calorie counting; and, there's no stress - I've already done all of that that once in my life. And looking back I can't believe how much of my time and energy it ate up. That, dear readers, is no way to live.

Does it help that I eat a plant-based diet? Of course it does. Naturally, I tend to eat more fruit and vegetables because of it. And does it help that I'm older and more confident in who I am? Absolutely. You've heard it before, but it bears repeating: you need to accept the things you cannot change, especially with who you physically are (which is easier to do with age, an outstanding support system, and on really great hair day, I think). For example, God made my hips wide - but I can't alter my bone structure, so... it is what it is. And it's so much easier to accept that and move on. I know I'm not perfect. I never will be. But I have definitely come to appreciate this old mug of mine...

On International No Diet Day my hope for you is that you get to eat something delicious with someone wonderful and just be in the moment. Don't forget the the wise words of Dr. Seuss: "Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You."

Love yourself. Life's too short not to.

Happy International No Diet Day!
