National Brown-Bag-It Day

"The brown bag, of course, had its imperfections. While some kids carried roast beef sandwiches, others had peanut butter. I have no way of knowing if all of those brown bags contained 'nutritionally adequate diets.' But I do know that those brown bags and those lunch pails symbolized parental love and responsibility." - Charles Mathias

It's National Brown-Bag-It Day!

Instead of buying lunch today, pack your own! And instead of using plastic (in case you forgot your reusable bags at home that is), ask for paper! Today is all about rockin' that infamous brown bag whichever way you want to. And - hey! - maybe like us you even have a local bar that sells cans of PBR served inside a brown paper bag for people to walk around holding... there's a reason why we're (Portland, ME) constantly in the top hipster cities of Amur-KAH!

Though I'm celebrating my day a little more on the boring side (pulling out crushed tomatoes, tortellini, olives, crushed red pepper, and olive oil out of a Whole Foods sack isn't exactly the most thrilling thing happening on teh intwebz today, I'm sure), it made me remember my youth. It usually contained a juice box, a Handi-snack, a baggy of pretzels or nuts, Oreo's, and two big handfuls of random candy. She would write our names on the bag and have them ready for us when we came trick-or-treating. Even deep into my late teens and early twenties, when I was the only one still getting a bag!, it was one of my favorite Halloween traditions. So, when I think of "brown-bagging-it", for me this is what I always think about!

However you celebrate, have a...
