National Candied Orange Peel Day

“Orange is the happiest color.” - Frank Sinatra

It's National Candied Orange Peel Day!

Candied fruit (also known as "glacé fruit") is exactly what it sounds like - fruit soaked in sugar water that's then coated in sugar. The process of preserving fruit in this manner has been done since the 14th century. Back then it took anywhere from days to months to do this - today, creating delicious candied fruits like pineapple, ginger, or watermelon can be done in a manner of hours.

Don't run away from food holidays like this - they're not as intimidating as they might seem. Sure, you could purchase pre-made glacé fruit, but I highly encourage you to make your own. Candied orange peels (grapefruit, lemon, or lime peels too) are super easy, and in my experience you don't need to go through as many steps as others might encourage to end-up with a beautiful and delicious product. I didn't, and they came out perfect - just ask the many neighbors on my street that tried them! All you really need are naval oranges, water, and sugar (a little chocolate to dunk them in doesn't hurt either!).

Happy National Candied Orange Peel Day!
