World Whisky Day

“What whiskey will not cure, there is no cure for.” - Irish proverb

It's World Whisky Day!
(Please note: this is a floating food holiday. It occurs on the third Saturday of May each year.)

World Whisky Day was first created in March 2012 by enthusiast Blair Bowman - a (then) 21 year old student from the University of Aberdeen in the UK - as a way to promote the spirit and educate those who have never tried it. It's now celebrated during the month of May because that's when "Whisky Month" in Scotland is held, and it also falls between the the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival and the Islay Whisky Festival.

There are other whisky/ey holidays celebrated throughout the world and Stateside, but none as legit or well-branded as today's is. So I encourage you to take part of this global celebration! Not sure what to order tonight? If you're not feeling it straight up or in your usual Diet Coke, why not try one of the following drinks...

1. Three Wise Men
(shot: one parts each of Johnny Walker, Jim Beam, and Jack Daniels)
2. Sunset Boulevard
(cocktail: whisky, ginger ale, and cranberry juice)
3. Whisky, ginger beer, and lime juice
(which goes by a slew of names, and it's how I celebrated today!)
4. Black Eyed Susan
(cocktail: whisky, vodka, oj, and sweet-sour mix)
5. Pickleback
(shot: whisky and pickle juice)

If you wanna join in the festivities today or see if any events are being held in your area, check out World Whisky Day online, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

Happy World Whisky Day!
