National Black Cow Day

"It's over now. Drink your big black cow and get out of here." - Steely Dan

It's National Black Cow Day!

This only seems appropriate, no?:

While it's easy to assume that Steely Dan are the great masterminds behind the black cow, it's actually widely believed that Frank Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado first came up with it in 1893 after he was inspired by the moon illuminating the snow on Cow Mountain. Sounds a little too romantic to be true, but who knows?

I always thought a black cow was cola with chocolate ice cream, but after doing a quick internet search... I may have been wrong (but really, is there a "wrong" way when it comes to ice cream? Me thinks not!). Most of the recipes I found call for root beer poured over vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup, that's then topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

Yeah? Well, I can do that, too!

Happy National Black Cow Day!
