World Ocean Day

“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” - Mahatma Gandhi

It's World Ocean Day!

The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in 2008 which recognized June 8th as World Ocean Day. The purpose of this is to raise global awareness about the importance of our oceans, while also advocating change for pollution and overfishing/overconsumption of sea life. According to the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration, the ocean covers 71% of the Earth's surface and contains 97% of the planet's water. "The ocean plays an integral role in many of the Earth's systems including climate and weather," their website states. "One of every six jobs in the United States is marine-related and over one-third of the U.S. Gross National Product originates in coastal areas. The ocean is key to transportation, recreation and its resources may hold the cures to many diseases."

That should be enough to convince you of the importance of of today's "holiday"!

There are lots of things you can do to help... participate in a beach clean-up effort; "wear blue, tell two" which is - according to WorldOceansDay.com - an opportunity to wear blue clothing and share two facts with someone you know to raise awareness for ocean conservation; or donate money to causes (like Sea Shepherd). Gastronomically speaking, you can choose to forgo eating seafood in lieu of plant-based substitutes like the ones my pals over at Sophie's Kitchen are making.

Or, you could celebrate today by switching over from whatever your "usual" snack is to gimMe  (pronounced jee-me; "gim" is Korean for "roasted seaweed", by the way) crispy roasted seaweed snacks which are positively loaded with minerals and vitamins, contain no GMOs, are gluten-free, and many of which are vegan. I was fortunate enough to try all four flavors: cheddar, honey dijon, sea salt, and sesame in both the sheets and the crumbles (and I ate them while I was at the beach overlooking the ocean, so it was an even more authentic experience!). If you like the vegetable (because - guess what?! - seaweed is a veggie!) as is, the sea salt ones are definitely for you. You'll appreciate how honest and unpretentious tasting they are (specifically the sheets). Personally, though, my favorite were the honey dijon flavored crumbles - they tasted exactly how I hoped they would (sweet with that mustardy kick) and seemed like they'd be an awesome addition in a salad!

Happy World's Ocean Day!
