Independence From Meat Day

“By eating meat we share the responsibility of climate change, the destruction of our forests, and the poisoning of our air and water. The simple act of becoming a vegetarian will make a difference in the health of our planet." - Thich Nhat Hanh

It's Independence From Meat Day!

All it takes is one brief look at your social media feed and you'll see that most people are talking about just three things on July 4th: fireworks, drinking, and grilling meat. It seems that BBQing is symbolic of summer; it starts on Memorial Day and ends on Labor Day. And while the former holiday is about paying respect to those who served and died in the United States Armed Forces, the latter holiday about celebrating our contributions as working class citizens, and July 4th being about our country's independence... none of them are about enjoying and promoting eating slaughtered cows, pigs, and chickens which is exactly what those three days have become all about.

Founded by the Vegetarian Awareness Network in Tennessee, Independence From Meat Day is all about exploring a plant-based diet and not contributing to the excessive animal consumption not just today but the whole summer. And with a little planning, vegetarian and vegan lifestyles are not that difficult to maintain.

I'm celebrating my freedom from flesh with a healthy vegetable rotini pasta coated with homemade pesto and diced sundried tomatoes. Not only do I feel sexy eating it - nothing clogging up these arteries, making me feel sluggish, or giving me a "food baby" here - I feel totally at peace knowing that not a single animal was in anyway involved in my meal.

Saving my health? Saving the lives of others? Saving the planet? That's how I want to honor my country today.

If you want to break free from the captivity of eating carcass in your cuisine, there's no better time than to start now.

Happy Independence From Meat Day!
