It's National Blueberry Muffin Day!
It is my opinion that if a Muffin Kingdom existed, blueberry would be the king (and bran would no doubt be the evil queen). After all, it seems to be the most common flavor of muffin there is; not that I'm complaining, because I'm a BIG fan (especially grilled and slathered in butter... oh yeah, babeh).
July happens to be (among other things) National Blueberry Month; it was first established as such by the USDA in 1999 for many reasons, including that the fruit is native to 35 of the 50 states, and are darn healthy to boot (see the proclamation here). So today's food holiday works really well... especially if you live in Minnesota where it's been the official state muffin since 1988! A third grade class from an elementary school in Carlton lobbied for it since wheat and wild blueberries are important and popular crops in the state.
(My lovely friend Kristen made these!)
And now you're all the wiser, foodies!
How will you celebrate today? Will you buy one at your local coffee chain (not gonna lie, I once was a sucker for Dunkin' Donuts blueberry muffins because of the chunks of sugar baked on top) or make your own? Even if you celebrate with something that just tastes like the food - you're still celebrating! So...
