National Chili Dog Day

"Next to jazz music, there is nothing that lifts the spirit and strengthens the soul more than a good bowl of chili." - Harry James

It's National Chili Dog Day!
(Please note: this is a floating food holiday. It usually occurs on the last Thursday of July each year.)

Let's talk options, yeah?

Option 1: The Basic
A hot dog in a bun topped with bean and meat chili.

Option 2: The Coney Island Hot Dog
A hot dog in a bun topped with an all-meat chili, diced onions, and mustard. Add cheese and it becomes a "Cheese Coney".

Option 3: A Sonoran Hot Dog
A hot dog wrapped in bacon in a bun topped with beans, tomatoes, onions, jalapeno salsa, cheese, mayo, mustard, and ketchup with first roasted chili on the side.

Option 4: An Original Oki Dog
Two hot dogs topped with chili and pastrami wrapped up in a flour tortilla.

Option 5: A Scrambled Dog
A chopped up hot dog in a bun covered in chili, onions, and pickles, and served with oyster crackers.

Option 6: A Carolina Dog
A hot dog in a bun topped with chili, coleslaw, onions, and sometimes mustard.

Or, lucky Option 7: Chili Dog a la Sonic (y'know, the hedgehog)
Ready for this? It's 1 lb of browned ground beef mixed with 1/2 a cup each of onions, peppers, and mushrooms, 1 tablespoon of Worcestshire sauce, 1 large can of crushed tomatoes, and 1 cup of BBQ sauce. Let simmer for a half hour before adding 1 teaspoon each of chili powder, cumin, and oregano. Then add 1 large can of drained red kidney beans. Simmer for an hour. Add hot dogs. Cook for another 15 minutes, before serving on toasted rolls (and topping with cheese, of course!).
[this comes from Archie Comics' "Sonic the Hedgehog" Issue #1... I actually received the recipe in a GIANT box of other Sonic-themed toys and games from a TV station once!]

Um... one of each, please!

Happy National Chili Dog Day!
