National Bratwurst Day

Patrick: “I was joking with the lunch lady – it was a bratwurst.”
Miss Perky: ”A bratwurst? My, aren’t we the optimist.” - from “10 Things I Hate About You”

It's National Bratwurst Day!

What happens when you take some veal, some pork, maybe some beef, too, for good measure, mash them all up together and then stuff that into a casing? You've got yourself some bratwurst (in German, "bratwurst" even translates roughly to a finely chopped meat/fried [brat] sausage [wurst]), which has been around since roughly the 14th century! Grill it, pan fry it, roast it, or braise it in some beer and you're on your way to a seriously German feast. Top it with some mustard, and serve with a side of sauerkraut, doughy pretzels, or potato salad, and a cold pint?

Lemme know what time dinner's at, yeah?

If you're a vegetarian, don't run away from this holiday. Try Tofurky® Beer Brats, Yves Veggie Brats Classic, or Viana VeggieFresh Bratwurst (can be found at Whole Foods) for your brats; Kim & Scott's for your pretzel needs; this amazing warm potato salad from PETA; and, be sure check out Barnivore.com to make sure your beer is animal-free, too.

Now go and have a (Google translate, don't fail me now): Gl├╝cklich nationalen Bratwurst Tag!

Happy National Bratwurst Day!
