National Chewing Gum Day

“TV is chewing gum for the eyes.” - Frank Lloyd Wright

It's National Chewing Gum Day!

My sister was notorious for chewing watermelon bubblegum when she was a little kid. It smelled so strongly that my parents would actually roll down the windows if we were in a car together to let in fresh air! Maybe because of that (and the fact that I was a kid who rocked a retainer for a spell) I wasn't a huge gum chewer until just a couple years ago when I discovered vegan B-Fresh cinnamon gum... since then, it's become a staple of my work-out routine!

It's believed that today's food holiday stems from the fact that William Wrigley Jr. (chewing gum mogul) was born on this date in 1861 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some folks suggest that National Chewing Gum Day is actually on February 15th (I've even celebrated it on that day in the past), but more evidence (like Wrigley's birthday) suggests that it's on September 30th. So, going with the majority, Almanac of Eats celebrates it today, too!

But really, when it comes to gum, is any day a bad day to chew?! Especially since chewing gum can help reduce stress and even improve concentration!

Happy National Chewing Gum Day!
