National Wiener Schnitzel Day

“Laws are like sausages. It's better not to see how they are made." - Otto Von Bismarck

It's National Wiener Schnitzel Day!

Many folks - even the food savvy - think wiener schnitzel has something to do with a hot dog or sausage-like product. In reality, a wiener schnitzel is a thin slab of boneless veal cutlet that's breaded then fried. It's traditionally served with potato salad, parsley potatoes, french fries, or Kopfsalat, and a wedge of lemon to spritz onto the meat. It's specialty of Vienna and is considered a national food of Austria. The confusion is probably as a result of the fast food chain named Der Wienerschnitzel (as it was originally called) founded in 1961 that was originally focused on - what?, that's right - hot dogs.

And now you're all the wiser, foodies.

Happy National Wiener Schnitzel Day!
