National Buy a Doughnut Day

“I owe it all to little chocolate donuts." - John Belushi

It's National Buy a Doughnut Day!

Wait... wait. The Food Holiday Gods want me to "buy a doughnut" today? That's it? That's all there is to it? Not like a "lavender and rosemary frosted limoncello" one (because, let's face it, sometimes food holidays get painfully specific)? Not an eel-filled cruller (because food holidays also seem to love celebrating peculiar eats no one has ever heard of)? All I have to do is... buy a doughnut?

Well, since this is already part of my weekly ritual (shout out to Holy Donuts in Portland, ME for helping me lose my figure one fried ring of love at a time), I think I can do that.... I'll even eat it, too!

What's your favorite doughnut? Jam or cream filled? Glazed? Coated with powdered sugar and cinnamon, coconut flakes, "butternut crunch", or sprinkles?

Is your mouth drooling yet?

Doughnuts, like many of our country's beloved foods, has foggy origins. Some believe that they were "created" by the Dutch settlers who called them "olykoeks" (that's right: oily cakes), while a New England ship captain named Hanson Gregory claims he "invented" them in the mid-1800's.

And now you're all the wiser, foodies.

Happy National Buy a Doughnut Day!
