National Caramel Apple Day

“Lemme just talk to you for a second about something that I think is good for America: caramel apples, ... I had one last night. Delicious. Not talking about candy apples. I think candy apples are a danger! You crack 'em, they're very sharp. You candy apple crowd need to wake up!" - Stephen Colbert

It's National Caramel Apple Day!

The concept of caramel and fruit combined has probably been around for centuries, but a fella named Dan Walker who worked as a sales representative for Kraft in the 1950's is credited with the current treat as we know it. He had the brilliant idea to print recipes for caramel apples on bags of caramel candies. And wouldn't you know? The seasonal treat exploded from there (it's all about good marketing, #aintthatthetruth).

I'm sure Dan never realized that a few decades later it would be super trendy to take a caramel apple and make it a gourmet dessert. These days creative culinary minds see the caramel apple as a base to start with. To it they add chocolate, peanut butter, sea salt, candies, dried fruits, or you name it to the already delicious snack.

So... are you a purist? Or are you going to venture out and try something a little more daring? What about a caramel apple doughnut? Think fried dough heaven, silky caramel, and tart fruit... yes, I'm still drooling from the experience!

Happy National Caramel Apple Day!
