National Raisin Bran Cereal Day

“If there are occasions when my grape turned into a raisin and my joy bell lost its resonance, please forgive me. Charge it to my head and not to my heart." - Jesse Jackson

It's National Raisin Bran Cereal Day!

Today is not the day for sugary, or brightly colored, chocolaty or fruity flavored cereals (with or without marshmallows). Though there's definitely a time and a place for a giant bowl of that! Today we focus on one of the most beloved healthy cereals there is: raisin bran, which is full of potassium, low in fat, and high in dietary fiber making it uber heart healthy. Many companies make their own version of the cereal (the name of which, though originally trademarked, is now in the public domain because all it does is list ingredients in the product), which has been around since the mid-1920's. The two most popular, though, are probably Kellogg's and Post. And if you were an eighties kid than you remembered (and LOVED) these commercials:

Perhaps because of my obsession with the California Raisins, there was a period of time in my later teenage years when I was strangely obsessed with both raisin bran and grape-nuts.  I don't think I've had a bowl of either since, so I've actually been looking forward to today for some time. One box of raisin bran, one box of organic soy milk, a comfy couch, and some morning cartoons?

I could get used to this!

Happy National Raisin Bran Cereal Day!
