National Vinegar Day

“If you pour oil and vinegar into the same vessel, you would call them not friends but opponents." - Aeschylus

It's National Vinegar Day!

Eat it over fries with salt, take a shot for a little energy, mix it with baking soda to make a volcano, use it to unclog your drain, as a deodorizor, as a washing solvent, or to get rid of ants.

Vinegar is one of the more useful "foods" there is.

One of my favorite food lores' state that Cleopatra made a bet with Marc Antony that she could spend a fortune (millions of sestertii) on a single meal. Betting against her, Marc Antony lost after Cleopatra dropped a pearl into a glass of vinegar and drank it after it dissolved. This story was reported by Pliny the Elder - a Roman author and philosopher - and since he has a beer named after him, how can it not be legit... right?

While some of the details may have been altered for dramatic effect (writers do that sort of thing, you know), pearls DO melt in vinegar. See:

Happy National Vinegar Day!
