Virginia

Statehood: June 25th, 1788 (10/50)

Virginia is for lovers.

Of what? Of who? The answer, essentially, is of where (and that's of Old Dominion, of course).  The iconic (now trademarked) slogan was created by Martin and Woltz Inc.; originally they had a series of ads for the state including "Virginia is for History Lovers," "Virginia is for Beach Lovers," etc. They thought it was too limiting, and so shortened it to an all encompassing version. "Virginia is for Lovers" was first used in Modern Bride in 1969... who would've known it would become so epic that it'd eventually be added to the Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame on September 21st, 2009?

Other fun facts? Originally, Virginia had shires (yes, like where hobbits live; they were eventually renamed to counties); the official state boat is the Chesapeake Bay Deadrise (a long, low fishing boat); the state was named after Elizabeth I (the Virgin Queen); and, Jamestown was the first English settlement... but, I'm sure you non-Virginians remembered that bit from elementary school history, right?

Now let's get to loving Virginia's very own state symbol!

State Beverage: Milk

(Along with much of the rest of the U.S.) Virginia declared milk it's official state beverage in 1982.

Peanut Butter Soup for the Soul
Makes: four servings

Ingredients:
1/2 stick butter or Earth Balance
2 cups onion, dice (about 1 large sweet onion)
2 garlic cloves, minced
3 Tablespoons flour
4 cups vegetable stock
2 cups smooth peanut butter
2 cups (alternative) milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 Tablespoons lime juice (about 1 large, or 2 small, limes)
1 teaspoon red chili pepper flakes

Method:
On medium heat, sauté onion in butter for 5 minute. Add garlic and continue cooking for another 3 minutes until fragrant. Next, add flour and mix until thickened and roux forms. Slowly add stock and mix so everything combines. Bring to a boil, then drop to medium-low heat. Add peanut butter, milk, salt, lime juice, and red chili pepper flakes. Stir well until peanut butter melts. Cook covered for twenty minutes, stirring often to continue breaking down peanut butter.
